James Oglethorpe was born on December 22, 1696, in County Surrey, England. He was the seventh of nine children in a large, rich family.

It was a very difficult time for England. There were battles going on all over Europe. England's soldiers were fighting in Queen Anne's War. James's father and brother joined in the fight. Both of them were killed.

Following his father and brother, James began to prepare to be a soldier. The lessons he learned and the people he met all helped him become the founder of the colony of Georgia.

He was a brave soldier. After fighting in the Austro-Turkish War, he went back to England. There he became a member of Parliament.
