James Garfield was our twentieth president. He was born in Ohio in 1831. His father died when he was two. Garfield had to work hard as a boy. He had to earn money to go to school. Eventually, he went to college in Massachusetts. He went back to Ohio and taught at Hiram College. He became president of this college the next year. He left Hiram College to serve in the Civil War. He left the war when he was elected to Congress. He served in Congress for 18 years. Garfield ran for president in 1880. He was a dark horse candidate. This means that his victory was a surprise.
