Into the Wild Blue Yonder
"Children, Mary has brought her father with her today. He will tell you about his job. Mary, would you please introduce your father?" Mr. Lockman asked.
The children at Pearl Valley Elementary School were having Career Day. They were learning about many different kinds of work. Many fathers and mothers had come to school to talk about their jobs.
"Yes, sir," Mary said. She looked up at a tall man with red hair. His hair was the same color as Mary's. "This is my father, Don Barber. He works at the airport. He is a customer service agent." Mary sat down at the front of the class.
"I am very happy to be here," Mr. Barber said. "I already know some of you. I hope I get to know all of you before the day is over. Mary said you want to know what my work is like."
"Are you a pilot?" Andrea asked.
"No. I work inside the airport, not on the planes," Mr. Barber said.
"Do you tell the pilots how to land and take off?" Bobbi asked.
"No, I don't work in the control tower, either," Mr. Barber said. "I work in the check-in area. When people come to the airport, there are some things they have to do before they get on the plane. First, they have to check in. I look at their tickets and tell them where they will be seated. Then I weigh their baggage and put tags on it."
"Why do you put tags on the luggage?" Gerry asked.
