Industry Day in Tanzania

Industry Day in Tanzania

Reading Comprehension for July 7

Think about the place where you live. Now think about how you would explain it to someone who had never been there. What would you say? Are the people nice? What do they look like? Where is a fun place to go where you live? What kinds of food do you eat? Is there anything unique about where you live that an outsider should know? Explaining yourself and your culture to someone very different could be difficult, right?

That's a problem that has been a part of Africa's history for many centuries. In Africa are many unique cultures, unlike any others anywhere. There are different people in different tribes, different cities, and different countries. And there are so many different ways of life across Africa. That's part of the reason why European explorers, rulers, and native Africans had a difficult time getting along.

Tanzania is a country in east-central Africa. Not much is known about its early history. Europeans arrived in Tanzania (also called Tanganyika) in the 1500s. They established a number of cities that served as bases for exploration and colonization. Within a few years, Tanzania and neighboring countries fell under German rule. If you looked at a map, you'd see that Germany is very far away from Tanzania. What problems could that have created? If you guessed that German culture was very different from Tanzanian culture, you'd be right!
