I Love a Parade!

"I love a parade," Aunt Martha said in a sing-song voice as she and her niece and nephew set up their chairs on Main Street.

"I do, too, Auntie," Mary Ellen said.

"Me, too," chimed in Bobby.

Each year, Aunt Martha took her niece and nephew to the Founders Day parade in their small town. It was a big event to commemorate Nathan Justice. He founded the town of Justiceville back in 1909. Various groups would make displays and put them on trailers or floats. Others would dress up in fancy clothes to march down Main Street in front of all the residents. One year, Bobby and Mary Ellen's older sister, Tabitha, marched with her dance group. They performed a dance in front of the reviewing stand where judges sat. Tabitha's group had won first place in their category.

Aunt Martha always made sure to set up near the reviewing stand. "We want to see the groups at their very best," she explained. The high school band would perform a march, and the majorettes would toss their batons (and catch them --most of the time).

Bobby's favorite group was First PAWS, a pet-therapy organization. People would bring their certified dogs and cats and walk along with them. Some pets were in carriers in wagons. Most wore the group's bandana. These animals had been trained to visit nursing homes and children's hospitals and bring joy to the residents who could not have or be near their own pets. This group was always a favorite at the parade.

Aunt Martha, Bobby, and Mary Ellen were settled in.

"I hear music!" Mary Ellen said, pointing toward the end of the street.
