What is an adventure? It may be exciting. It may be dangerous. It can be something that no one else has done. It can be something that you have never done. Roald Amundsen wanted a life of adventure.

Amundsen was from Norway. Norway is a country in Europe. From the time that he was a child, he wanted to be an explorer. He wanted to explore cold areas. He would sleep with the windows open. He did this in the winter too. He wanted his body to get used to the cold.

In 1903, Amundsen went on his first adventure. He sailed a boat to the Arctic. It was a dangerous trip. The ocean was filled with ice. They had to wait for ice to melt. Then they could sail on. The trip took three years.
