Helen Keller's Mischief
Helen Keller's world was pitch black and silent. After a fever left her blind and deaf, Helen's early years were difficult. It was hard for her to communicate her needs, wants, and feelings with those around her. This often left her frustrated. Sometimes her frustration led to tantrums. Other times it led to mischief.
Once when Helen was five, she locked her mother in the pantry. Kate Keller screamed and pounded on the door. Helen did not help her. Instead, she sat on the porch steps and laughed! Mrs. Keller was stuck in the pantry for three hours before someone found her and unlocked the door.
On another occasion, young Helen and her friend Martha were cutting paper. After a while they got bored with that and decided to use their scissors to cut other things. The girls cut their shoelaces. They also cut leaves. Then they started to cut each other's hair! Thankfully, Mrs. Keller stopped the game before both girls were bald!
