Helen Keller: The Wild Child
Helen Keller was a wild child. Since she could not see or hear, Helen was easily frustrated. She threw temper tantrums when she didn't get her way. Since Helen's parents didn't want to upset her more, they always gave in to Helen's angry antics. She got everything she wanted! This only made Helen's behavior worse. At meal time, Helen never used utensils. Instead she picked up her food with her fingers and shoved it into her mouth. Once she was finished with her favorites, she would walk around the room. While wandering, she smelled everyone else's food. If she smelled something she liked on someone else's plate, she'd take it and eat it!
Anne Sullivan, Helen's teacher, was appalled by Helen's behavior. After living with the Kellers for only a few days, she decided that Helen's behavior needed to change. One morning Helen tried to take some sausage from Anne's plate. She reached for the sausage, but Anne stopped her. Anne placed her hand firmly on top of Helen's. Helen was mad! She tried to grab the meat again. Once again, she was stopped by Anne. Anne was determined to teach her student self control. After a terrible tantrum, Helen gave up. She stopped reaching for the sausage and returned to her seat.
