Reading Comprehension for June 1
"Heads or tails?" Julian said as he heard the ring of the ice cream truck.
Stacie hesitated for just a second. "Um, tails, I guess."
Julian tossed the quarter into the sky. The winner was going to buy the loser ice cream. This was a new tradition with Julian and Stacie every Wednesday and Friday. Their mothers got together for a summer book club in their neighborhood. Each day, the ice cream truck came faithfully at the same time. One day, Julian only had a quarter, so he had suggested he and Stacie "flip a coin" to see who would buy both ice creams. Of course, he really hoped to win because he didn't have any money! Lucky for him, he did! Julian's luck seemed to continue, and so far, he had won three out of four coin tosses.
As Stacie watched the quarter pop into the air, she wondered where the whole idea of flipping a coin ever came from. She was beginning to think it was rather silly. But then the coin landed on the ground tails up, and she jumped up and down with glee. Finally! Now it was Julian's turn to pay.
Julian and Stacie skipped up to the ice cream truck and picked out cones dipped in chocolate. Stacie grinned as Julian pulled three wadded dollars out of his pants pocket. He reluctantly offered the payment.
Stacie and Julian turned and walked toward the front porch of Stacie's house. They sat on the porch swing and enjoyed their cones.
"I wonder where the idea of flipping a coin came from," Stacie said.
"I don't know," said Julian, licking the ice cream melting down the cone.
"When we finish our cones, let's look it up."
