Harriet Tubman
Most six-year-olds like to play with their toys and spend time with their friends. Harriet Tubman would have enjoyed doing those things too. But she couldn't. Harriet was born in the 1820s in a one-room hut with a dirt floor. Harriet's parents were slaves. Harriet was a slave, too. When she was six years old, she was a house servant.
Harriet knew that she did not want to be a slave forever. She would have to escape if she wanted to be free. Some people in the South disagreed with slavery. They thought that it was wrong. They helped slaves escape from their owners. They hid slaves in their homes and helped them find their way to the next safe house. This was known as the Underground Railroad. Each stop was called a station. The people who helped the slaves were called conductors.
