Harp and Harpist
"What a beautiful sound!" Melody thought as she sat with her friend Benjamin for the recital.
Melody and Benjamin's friend Miriam was performing her senior recital for college. Miriam had begun to learn the harp when she was seven years old. She had faithfully continued through high school (where Melody and Benjamin first met her) and on to college. She was a determined musician with aspirations to play for a major symphony orchestra.
Melody remembered all the long hours of practice that Miriam had put into her music. There were times that Miriam had skipped doing fun things like going to football games or parties because she had competitions or concerts to be a part of. At first, Melody thought Miriam was crazy, but over time, she developed a great respect for her friend. She and Benjamin could tell that Miriam really loved playing the harp. She wasn't doing this just because someone in her family was making her do it. They wanted to support her.
They attended several different concerts when Miriam was playing. Usually after a concert, they would get together for coffee at a local shop they all loved. There, they learned many things about the harp as Miriam shared her knowledge. She also was a good listener, showing interest in their hobbies of sports, cheerleading, and painting.
Melody remembered a conversation she and Miriam had had some time ago, one of the times when Benjamin could not come with them.
While sipping a caramel latte, Melody had asked Miriam, "How did you become interested in playing the harp?"
Miriam closed her eyes briefly, as if trying to remember something.
"When I was little, about seven I think, I got to attend my first wedding. I was so excited, dressing up in a lovely little pink dress with ruffles."
Melody smiled as she took another sip of the latte.
