Happy Hanukkah!

There are many holidays celebrated during winter. Can you name some of the winter holidays? Did you think of Hanukkah? It is also known as the Festival of Lights. This holiday is celebrated by Jewish people. Every winter these families gather to remember a miracle from long ago.


Once, there was a very mean Syrian king. He told the Jewish people that they could no longer pray to their God. One man and his sons fought that king. They were the Maccabees. After three years of fighting, the Maccabees won the war! Once the war was over, the Jewish people went back to their temple. They wanted to pray to their God. They also wanted to light the lamp. The men searched the temple. They hoped to find enough oil to light the flame. Thankfully, they were able to find a very small amount. It had just enough oil to light the flame for one day. A miracle happened! The flame stayed lit for eight days!


Now, Jewish families celebrate Hanukkah. Every night they light one candle on their menorah. They do this for eight days. This reminds them .....
