December 12 is a very important day in Mexico. That is because almost all Mexican people are Catholics. It is called Guadalupe Day.
Guadalupe Day honors the Virgin Mary. Christians believe that she was the mother of Jesus. Catholics in Mexico believe that the Virgin Mary appeared to a man named Juan Diego and talked to him.
The story took place more than 450 years ago. Juan Diego was a poor native Mexican. One day he was walking by a rocky hill not far from Mexico City. Suddenly, he saw a woman standing on the hill. She was surrounded by bright light. She told him that she was the mother of God. She told him she wanted a shrine in her honor to be built on the hill.
