Great Basin National Park

Great Basin National Park is in Nevada. There are three ways to explain the Great Basin. It is a 200,000 square mile area that drains within. It includes most of Nevada, half of Utah, and parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, and California. It is made of many smaller basins or drains. Some of these are the Great Salt Lake, Pyramid Lake, and the Humboldt Sink. The Great Basin is an area with many mountain ranges. These mountains run north to south. They have flat valleys or basins in between. Finally, the Great Basin Desert supports a wide variety of the plant and animal communities in the area. Great Basin National Park presents a sampling of this entire region.

Great Basin National Park has a very dark night sky. On a clear, moonless night, many things can be seen without a telescope. There are thousands of stars. You can see five of the eight planets. Star clusters are visible. You can look for meteors. The Milky Way can be seen. You can also see man-made satellites as they orbit the Earth.
