Grandparents' Cottage

Gail loved the lake in all its moods. Sometimes it was as calm as a mill pond. Sometimes there was light breeze that made cat's paws on the water's surface. Then there were days like today when the lake was choppy. White-capped waves marched in lines toward the rocky shore. It was no longer summer, and the trees were changing color. They were a wild mix of yellows, reds, and greens that spread over the hills like a patchwork quilt. Some of the leaves were floating on the lake's surface like tiny boats.

It was too bad Dad hadn't been able to wait for Grandpa at the dock with her, but he was already late for a business meeting. Gail hadn't minded waiting by herself. It never took Grandpa long to get there. Gail had stayed with her grandparents several times at their summer cottage. It was her favorite place in the world. It was a wonderful place for stretching her imagination.

A few minutes later, Gail saw Grandpa approaching in his boat. She jumped up and down and waved her arms. She looked closely and saw him waving back at her. In no time at all, the boat was pulling alongside the dock. Gail heard Grandpa turn off the engine and the boat slowly moved into position at the dock. Gail held onto the side of the white fiberglass boat while Grandpa got out. "Thanks, Gail," he said as he stepped on the wooden dock. "Let's tie it off, and we can get the things loaded."
