Dan loves his Grandpa Nils. Grandpa Nils carves animals for Dan. He carves cats and dogs. He carves snakes and birds. He carves mice and bears. Sometimes he even carves lions!


Grandpa Nils tells good stories, too. One day Grandpa Nils told Dan a story. The story was about Grandpa Nils when he was six years old.

"No, Nils," his mother said. "You cannot go outside. It is snowing. It is very cold. There are bears outside."


Nils was six. He knew many things. He knew it was cold outside. He knew it was snowing. He knew there were no bears outside.


"I will wear my coat," he said. "I will wear my gloves. I will wear my hat. I will not be cold."


Nils' mother was making pancakes. They smelled good.


"I know you will wear your coat," she said. "I know you will be warm. But there are bears outside."


Nils was six. He knew many things. He knew he had not seen a bear by his house in the spring. He knew he had not seen a bear by his house in the summer. He knew he had not seen a bear by his house in the fall. He knew there were no bears outside.
