Soil is a thin layer of living and nonliving material. It covers the surface of planet Earth. Soil has an important job. It provides water and nutrients to the plants that grow in it.
Soil is made up of four major components. Rocks are one of them. Over time, wind, water, and chemicals break big rocks into smaller pieces. These small pieces play a big role in the soil. Decaying plants and animal matter are ingredients as well. This organic material adds nutrients to the soil. Water and air are the final two components.
