Going to the Circus

P.T. Barnum's Birthday

Reading Comprehension for July 5

Billy stopped his bike as he and his sister Rosa rode along the sidewalk near their home. "Look, Rosa," he said, putting his feet down on the ground and pointing to a big yellow sign on a telephone pole. "The circus is coming to town this weekend. Do you think Mom and Dad will take us?"

Rosa stopped beside him and looked toward the sign. "Oh, that would be fun," she said. "Let's go home and ask."

The children got back on their bikes and headed home. When they arrived, they put their bikes away in the garage and went to the backyard talking animatedly. They found Mom and Dad working in the garden.

Mom got up from her knees and brushed off her hands. "How was your bike ride?"

"It was great!" said Rosa.

"We want to ask you a question," said Billy.

"Sure," said Dad. "What is it?"

"The circus is coming to town this weekend," said Billy. "Can we go?"

Mom looked at Dad and grinned. "Well, I don't know," said Dad reluctantly.

"Oh, please," said Rosa.

Dad laughed. "Yes, we can go. As a matter of fact, Mom already has tickets."

Billy clapped his hands. "Really?"

"Yes, really," said Mom.

"That's great!" said Billy. "When do we go?"
