Gila Monsters
The name of the Gila monster makes it sound like a scary animal. It is the largest lizard in the United States. It lives in the desert areas in the Southwest. The Gila monster is named after the Gila River Basin.
The Gila monster moves very slowly. Beadlike scales cover its body. The scales are different colors and can be pink, blue, yellow, orange, and black. The feet of the Gila monster have five toes and very sharp claws.
The Gila monster is poisonous. It is also a carnivore, or a meat-eater. The Gila monster eats rodents, frogs, lizards, insects, and eggs. The Gila monster doesn't have very good eyesight. It does have a good sense of smell and uses that sense to hunt for food. The Gila monster first sneaks up on its prey. Then the Gila monster bites the prey. The Gila monster's bite is very strong. The Gila monster then swallows the food without chewing it. The Gila monster doesn't swallow eggs but first breaks them open.
