Richard More stood for a moment and looked out over the water. It sparkled in the fall sunshine. He could smell the salt in the air. He closed his eyes.
If he and his family had stayed in England, he'd be playing with his brother and sisters. Here in the New World, he was the only one left. His siblings had died after arriving in the New World and during the winter. He still missed them.
Richard was only seven, but he knew it was time to get back to work. He picked up his basket of corn and moved a little farther up the field. Squashes and pumpkins dotted the ground at the feet of the corn stalks.
The boy looked over at his friend, Love Brewster. They weren't related, but the boys lived in the same house. They looked and acted like brothers. Love's brother, Wrestling, was also doing his part. He quickly got the hang of twisting the fully ripened ears of corn from the stalks.
"I heard a secret this morning," the six-year-old said to the two older boys.
"What did you hear?" asked Richard.
"We're going to celebrate the harvest and have a feast of thanksgiving," said Wrestling.
"Maybe we'll get to help hunt," said Love Brewster hopefully.
