Getting Active!
"Do I have to go outside to play?" Mary whined to her mother. "I want to watch TV."
Mrs. Smith looked at her daughter with concern. She sighed. When Mrs. Smith was growing up, it didn't take any convincing to go outside. It seemed that all the kids in her neighborhood would go outside to play after school. She always loved to join in a game of kickball or tag.
The Smiths lived in a neighborhood with lots of young families. They had moved there on purpose, hoping to get Mary and her brother to make friends and be more active. When they'd lived in the city, there was not much room to play. So Mary and her brother Mark had gotten used to playing on the computer or watching TV. Mrs. Smith had to admit that during that time, she and her husband had been so busy with their new jobs that they hadn't made much effort to get the kids actively involved in anything. Now that they lived in the suburbs, they hoped that would change.
That evening, after Mr. Smith came home from work and the kids had gone off to bed, Mrs. Smith shared her concern. Mr. Smith was drinking a cup of decaffeinated coffee after his late dinner.
