Gertrude Chandler Warner was born on April 16, 1890, to Edgar and Jane Warner. She was born in Putnam, Connecticut, in a home across from a railroad station. She had a sister named Frances and a brother named John.
Gertrude always loved to read and write. When she was five years old, she knew she wanted to be an author when she grew up. She was sick very often as a child, so she had a lot of time for reading and writing. Her favorite story was Alice in Wonderland. Gertrude enjoyed playing with her dollhouse. She also enjoyed visiting her grandparents' farm and picking wildflowers. Her favorite flower was the violet.
Every year Gertrude's mother bought notebooks for Gertrude and her sister to write in. They loved to create stories. When Gertrude was nine, she wrote and drew pictures for a book for her grandfather Carpenter's Christmas present. It was called Golliwogg at the Zoo. Each year after that, a new creation was presented to him from the team of sisters who jokingly called themselves "Warner and Co."
Besides reading and writing, Gertrude's family also enjoyed music together. Each one could play an instrument. Gertrude learned to play the cello and pipe organ.
