Fascinating Frogs
When I was little, my brother and I caught a tadpole. He looked a lot like a fish. We liked to watch him swim. Then one day I noticed that he looked different. Our tadpole was growing legs! What was happening? Was my brother a magician? Had he done a magic trick? What was happening to our tadpole? My brother was not doing a magic trick, but something almost magical was happening. Our tadpole was turning into a frog!
Every spring, mother frogs lay lots of eggs in water. When these eggs hatch, tiny tadpoles are born. Tadpoles live in water. They breathe underwater using their gills. Tadpoles may look a lot like fish, but they are not fish. They are going to be baby frogs. As the tadpoles grow, they begin to change. First, they grow two tiny back legs. Next, they grow two front legs. Finally, their fish-like tail disappears. Then they are frogs. Frogs like the water, but unlike tadpoles, they cannot breathe underwater. They must use their lungs to breathe air.
