But one day, the friendship went sour. Not exactly one day - the friendship went bad over many years. The story of this friendship - and breakup - involves money, power, wars, and murder. It is the story of Egypt and the British.


Egypt is a country in Africa. It is on the northern coast of Africa. The Egyptian civilization is one of the oldest in the world. People have been living in Egypt for many thousands of years. Before there were cities in most other places in the world, there were cities in Egypt. Imagine living in one of the oldest countries in the world. Would you be proud of it? Many Egyptians are proud of their country and history.


During the course of Egypt's history, there have been periods when other countries have ruled it. In the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire ruled Egypt. Egypt's ruler tried hard to make it a free country. Some might say he tried too hard. He made the country poor. To fix this, the Egyptian government went to Europe.
