Emperor Penguins
Penguins are a kind of bird. Penguins are different from other birds. They cannot fly! Most penguins live in cold places. They have thick layers of fat on their bodies. This keeps them warm, but it also makes them too heavy to fly. Even though penguins do not fly, their wings are very important. Penguins swim through the ocean to find food. Their wings help them to move quickly in the water.
Emperor penguins are the largest kind of penguin. Most emperor penguins grow to 45 inches tall and can weigh as much as 88 pounds! Wild emperor penguins only live in one place in the world, Antarctica. They are the only animal that lives on land during the winter there. Most animals cannot stand the cold temperatures. Strong winds can make it feel even colder. Emperor penguins work together to stay warm. They huddle close together in a big circle. Each penguin takes turns standing in the middle of the circle where it is warm. When that penguin gets warm, it moves toward the outside of the circle. This lets another penguin into the middle to get warm.
