Eleanor Roosevelt - First Lady of the World
You may not recognize her name. You might have to ask your grandparents about her. Eleanor Roosevelt was the wife of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. Eleanor Roosevelt was called by many, including President Harry S. Truman, the "First Lady of the World." She was beloved by hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. She spent her life trying to improve human rights everywhere she went.
As a child, Eleanor may have wanted someone to come to her aid. Hers was not a life of leisure and happiness. Her parents were fairly wealthy, but it takes more than money for most people to be happy.
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born on October 11, 1884. Her father's name was Elliott Roosevelt. He was the younger brother of Theodore Roosevelt. Her Uncle Teddy would become President of the United States a few years later. Eleanor was the name given to her to honor her father. Eleanor's mother was Anna Hall Roosevelt. Her family was well-to-do also. Eleanor had two younger brothers. Elliott Jr. lived a little less than four years. Hall Roosevelt was born in 1891. Eleanor's parents tried to keep up the appearance of wealth even when times were very hard.
