Eat Your Veggies!

Sarah sighed. She hated weeding. However, it was one of her weekly chores. One day a week, usually on Friday or Saturday, Sarah would go out to the vegetable garden behind their home. She was to pull up any weeds that she saw. Her brother did it one day a week as well. Her mom or dad watered the garden as needed. Sometimes the garden was a lot of work, but it did yield a lot of vegetables.

Sarah had grown up eating fresh vegetables from the garden. Ever since she could remember, she liked all sorts of vegetables. Now that she was a bit older, she was learning how valuable vegetables were. In her health class at school, she had learned that she should eat several servings of vegetables per day. Vegetables were full of vitamins, minerals, and other important nutrients like carbohydrates and fiber.

Most of the kids Sarah knew did not seem to get several servings of vegetables per day. Some barely ate vegetables at all! The more she learned about vegetables, the more she wanted to make sure she ate several per day. She was thinking about this one morning while weeding the garden. A few moments later, her mother came out to join her.

"What are you thinking about?" Mom asked.

"I'm thinking about how to make sure I eat several servings of vegetables per day," Sarah answered, yanking hard on a stubborn weed.

"You already do pretty well at that," Mom said.

"I know, but I'd like to aim for ten servings a day."

"That's terrific, Sarah. I get close to that."
