Once upon a time, there was a cow named Bessie. Bessie lived on a big farm. She had lived there for many years. She loved to eat the rich green grass and clover on her farm. Every day was the same. She'd leave the barn and follow the other cows to the far end of the pasture. Then she would eat grass and slowly move back toward the barn. In the evening, the cows were given some hay. Then, they would go into stalls to sleep. Sometimes it was a little boring, Bessie thought. But once in a while, something interesting would happen. Like today.
Today, a group of elementary-aged children came from the local day camp to visit the farm. They were studying farm animals, and so they had come to see the cows, goats, chickens, and horses. They were to try to learn something new about these animals. Bessie knew of something unique that she could share - if only she could speak.
So, Bessie did the next best thing. She burped. And she burped and burped again. She took several mouthfuls of grass, chewed and swallowed, and then let another one loose. The children began to laugh. They had never seen a cow burp quite so much. In fact, they had really never seen a cow burp at all!
Mrs. Ellis, the teacher, smiled. "Children, I think Bessie might be trying to tell us something. Did you know that cows produce a great deal of gas?"
