Derek loved to spend the weekend at Grandma and Grandpa's house. They had a large yard and lived at the top of a hill. His cousins lived next door. They always had a very good time playing. They liked to play together. Derek loved to yell and shout as they played. It was the best part of the game. In the summer, they played under the old oak tree in the front yard. They would pretend it was a pirate ship or a spaceship. In the winter, it would shelter a snow fort. No matter what they played, they made a lot of noise.
One day Derek had a cold when he went to stay with his grandparents. He felt fine, but he had no voice. His cousins were sick at home and could not come over to play.
I will not have any fun here, he thought to himself. Games must be loud to be fun!
At lunchtime, they sat by the big picture window. Just outside was a bird feeder. Derek and his grandparents ate soup and sandwiches as they looked out the window. They saw many different birds coming and going. Derek smiled as he watched them. Each bird tried to get just the right place to eat some seeds.
