Dancing Dressage Horses

Danny was visiting his uncle in Virginia. Virginia was very different from what he was used to in Montana. The air felt much moister, as though a thick blanket was hanging over him all the time. The trees were tall and sturdy, not like the spindly trees in Danny's subdivision at home. Today they were going to see a horse show, and Danny couldn't wait to see barrel races and bucking broncos. He had many friends who had horses at home.

Danny and Uncle Ben drove to the horse show. They parked Uncle Ben's white Subaru and took their places on benches around the arena. Flies buzzed noisily around them, asking for samples of their French fries.

"This looks different from the rodeos at home," observed Danny. "Why are letters posted all around the sides of the arena?"

"That is so the horses can learn the alphabet," joked Uncle Ben with a smile. "Actually, those letters serve as reference points for the riders as they do their routines in the competition."

Danny watched the first rider come into the ring. Wow, he sure didn't dress like a cowboy! The rider had a top hat on. The rider was wearing a black coat and white breeches. The rider had gloves on. The rider looked so fancy. Even the shiny black horse looked elegant with his tightly-braided mane.
