Yesterday my sister pulled my hair. It hurt! Today I got a haircut. I was really nervous. I thought that if my sister's little hand could hurt my hair, a big sharp pair of scissors would really hurt my hair. But it didn't! Why doesn't a haircut hurt?
Your hair is made of keratin. It is a type of protein. It is the same protein found in your fingernails and toenails. Your hair grows through tiny holes on your head. These are called follicles. At the base of each follicle is the root of each hair. The root of each hair is alive. The rest of your hair, though, is actually dead!
