Congaree National Park

Congaree National Park is in South Carolina. This area became a park in 2003. Before this time, the area was known as Congaree Swamp National Monument. This park protects the largest remnant of old-growth floodplain forest in North America.

A floodplain is a low lying area near a river. It is covered by water from time to time. A swamp is a low lying area that is covered by water all the time. Water from the Congaree and Wateree Rivers pass over the floodplain in the park. The waters carry nutrients and sediments. These renew a unique ecosystem. There are forested wetlands and oxbow lakes. There are slow moving creeks and sloughs. These all provide habitats for the many organisms that live here.
