She told her husband she wanted to write a book. He turned two closets that were next to each other into her special writing place. Her writing career began in a closet.
Patricia Reilly Giff was born on April 26, 1935. She was born in New York. As a child, books were important to her. Her favorite books were The Secret Garden and The Black Stallion. She also liked the Nancy Drew series. Patricia loved reading so much. Her sisters often had to grab books away from her just to get her to listen to them. Later, Patricia's own children recall doing the same thing.
Patricia went to college. She became a reading teacher. She was a teacher for twenty years. During those years, she attended college and earned more degrees. Patricia got married. She and her husband had three children. One day Patricia announced that she was going to write a book.
