Cafeteria Feud

Food Service Workers Day

Reading Comprehension for September 24

"I hate the food here," Melinda said to her friend Stephanie. "I hate buying lunch here. I wish my mom would pack lunch for me."

Melinda progressed through the cafeteria line with a sour look on her face. She continued to mutter under her breath. One of the cafeteria servers smiled and asked, "Beans or corn with that?"

"Whatever," Melinda answered with a sneer. "None of it is good, anyway."

The worker frowned. She had dealt with her last mean-spirited student of the day.

"That's it!" she cried. "I've had it with you ungrateful kids." She took off her gloves and threw them onto the counter. She stomped off to the back room.

"Get a load of that!" Melinda said loudly. "Who spit in her cereal this morning?"

"You did," said a voice behind her. It was Mr. Spellman, the principal. "Come with me, Melinda."

Mr. Spellman walked Melinda up on the stage that was in the cafeteria, which doubled as an auditorium. He tapped the microphone.
