Once upon a time, there was a carpenter. He built houses. He built furniture. Farmers bought his things. He did not sell much. He was poor. Eight years after opening his woodshop, there was a fire. The carpenter built another woodshop. He started making toys.
In 1932, Ole Kirk Christiansen began making wooden toys. He made cars and trucks. He made piggy banks. He made pull toys. The farmers traded food for his toys. Ole Kirk started making yo-yos. He sold a few. He then turned the yo-yo parts into truck wheels.
Ole Kirk turned his toyshop into a business. His son worked for him. They called their company Lego. The name means "play well."
