What do a Martian, a member of the Apple Dumpling Gang, a superhero, a magician, and a single father have in common? They are all film and television characters that actor Bill Bixby played during his Hollywood career that spanned more than thirty years.
Wilfred Bailey Bixby was born in San Francisco on January 22, 1934. Bill fell in love with acting while he was in high school. In college he tried to concentrate on getting a pre-law degree but couldn't stop thinking about acting. Finally, he made a deal with himself. He would try to make a living as an actor for five years. If it didn't work out, he'd go back to law.
Bixby got his first guest appearance on TV in The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis in 1961, and then he went on to do other shows. In 1963, he was cast in a co-starring role in My Favorite Martian. The show was a hit and lasted for three seasons.
Following the show, Bixby appeared in four films. Two of the films starred Elvis Presley.
