Best Friends
Tim slammed the door and sulked off to his room. His mother heard him come home and knew something was wrong. Tim didn't usually show strong emotions about anything, so this was out of character. She wanted to ask him what was bothering him, but she thought she should give him some time first.
Tim lived and went to school in a unique underwater research lab called the Permanent Human Colony. He had lived there with his family for a long time. All of the families that lived there considered it a privilege to take part in the experiment. Tim's dad was the director of the colony.
Tim's mother put some fresh fruit on a tray and took it into Tim's room. "You seemed a little upset when you came home. Is everything alright?" she asked as she set the tray down on the corner of his desk.
"Yes, I'm fine, Mom," said Tim. "Thanks for the snack."
"You know if something is bothering you, you can talk about it with me. I am always here for you," said Mom.
"That's more than I can say for Lori," said Tim.
Mom sat on the edge of the bed and waited for Tim to continue. He hadn't really intended to go further, but he saw his mother was waiting, so he said, "It's just that Lori and I were planning on being team members in the Science Debate Club. Today I learned she had asked Jane Freeman to be her partner. I don't really care that she and Jane are going to be teammates, but I thought she could have at least told me first."
"Maybe Lori just wants to make friends with some of the other kids in your class. You know, you two have been inseparable since you got back from the moon colony last year. Everyone knows you are good friends because you are always together. Maybe Lori just needs some space."
