Bess Truman was born in 1885. Her birth name was Elizabeth Virginia Wallace. She loved her hometown of Independence, Missouri. She was nicknamed Bess at a young age. Bess was a great athlete. She did well in baseball, tennis, and ice skating. Bess met Harry Truman when he moved to Independence. They were in the same class from fifth grade through the end of high school. They were engaged in 1918. Harry left to fight in France during World War I. When he returned the next year, Harry and Bess got married. They had one daughter, Mary Margaret.
