Bess Truman

Bess Truman was born in 1885. Her birth name was Elizabeth Virginia Wallace. She loved her hometown of Independence, Missouri. She was nicknamed Bess at a young age. Bess was a great athlete. She did well in baseball, tennis, and ice skating. Bess met Harry Truman when he moved to Independence. They were in the same class from fifth grade through the end of high school. They were engaged in 1918. Harry left to fight in France during World War I. When he returned the next year, Harry and Bess got married. They had one daughter, Mary Margaret. Bess traveled with Harry when he became involved in politics. In 1934, Harry was elected to the Senate. Bess and Margaret moved to Washington, D.C., while Congress was in session. They returned to Independence when it was not. Bess worked as a secretary in Harry's office. Harry was Franklin Roosevelt's vice president during Roosevelt's fourth term as president.
