Barbeque or Cooking Out?

Barbeque Day

Reading Comprehension for May 4

I let the door slam behind me. "Hey, Mom! I'm home! Guess what!" I cried.

Mom turned from the sink where she was soaking some dishes. She wiped her hands on the dish towel that seemed to always hang from her waist (except, of course, when we went out to a restaurant or something).

"What is it, sweetheart?"

"I got invited to Colin's house for a barbeque on Saturday!"

"That's wonderful," Mom replied with a wide grin. She knew how hard it had been for me to make friends since we moved. Dad had been transferred from his company in New England to a state in the Southeast. I was still making the adjustment to a new school and new acquaintances. Colin had a last name that began with the same letter as mine, so we often sat near each other. We had started chatting between classes, and our friendship was growing.

"He asked me to bring a dessert. Can we make those yummy peanut butter chocolate chip cookies?"

"That sounds like a good idea. Let's do that on Saturday so they will be fresh for the party."

Throughout the week, I was very excited and told Colin about it. "Thanks for inviting me. I love barbeques. We had them all the time up north."

Colin looked at me a bit suspiciously. "I'm glad you can come. I think you will like our barbeque."

"I'm sure I will. We are making the cookies Saturday."

Finally, the weekend came. Mom and I baked the cookies first thing in the morning, while the day wasn't too hot. We were still getting used to the warmer weather earlier in the year, and it had been unseasonably warm this spring. Once the cookies cooled, we covered them tightly with plastic wrap, and I went out to play with my dog.
