Bach's Favorite Bird?
Are you ready for a corny joke? Why do some people think that Johann Sebastian Bach may have preferred chickens rather than any other bird? The great composer may have liked the way their clucks say, "Bach, Bach, Bach!"
Fried chicken, chicken salad, and chicken pot pies are all ways that people enjoy eating chicken. Eggs can be part of every meal. Some people want to make sure that these popular birds are treated well. That is why May 4 is International Respect for Chickens Day. This unique holiday also honors turkeys, ducks, and other domestic fowl.
One group that works hard for poultry is a nonprofit group called United Poultry Concerns. Their job is to promote "the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl." They want to encourage people to have good accommodations and lifestyles for these birds. What can you do if you don't own chickens? Some suggestions about what to do to celebrate chickens are to hold a perky poultry party or write a letter to an editor about how people can help chickens.
