Autumn Migrations

Migration is a long trip made by groups of animals. Migrations happen at about the same time each year. Migrating animals usually stay in their new homes for several weeks or months. Then they return to their earlier homes.

Many kinds of birds migrate south each autumn. They fly north in the spring. Other kinds of animals migrate, too. Whales, some seals, and some fish migrate in the oceans.

Mountain sheep migrate in autumn. They migrate to get away from winter snow. In the spring, they travel up the mountain to find more grass. Deer and caribou migrate to find food. Wildebeests in Africa migrate between rivers and grasslands. They follow seasonal rains. Monarch butterflies are one kind of insect that migrates. Many of the Monarch butterflies spend their summer here in the United States. They will migrate to Mexico in autumn.
