When summer ends, autumn begins. Autumn activities include the start of school, football games, and apple harvests. Autumn is a time for festivals, too. Autumn festivals in America differ from state to state. Many states have arts and crafts festivals in autumn. An arts and crafts festival is an event in which the work of local area artists and craftsman are displayed and sold. Some festivals are large and elaborate, lasting several days. Others may be one-day affairs.
Octoberfest, or Oktoberfest, is an autumn event in many states. The first Oktoberfest originated in Germany. It is now considered Germany's most famous event. In Germany, it is a sixteen-day fair in late September ending on the first of October with food, entertainment, and rides. Many U.S. states have Oktoberfests in autumn, too. Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed town in the state of Washington that celebrates Oktoberfest. The celebration includes musical parades the first three Saturdays in October.
Columbus Day is an autumn holiday. In many places, a Columbus Day parade is held on the second Monday in October. Many Columbus Day activities celebrate Columbus's Italian heritage. In Denver, a giant Columbus Day party follows the parade.
