The Frog and Toad stories were written by Arnold Lobel. He wrote many children's books. He was also an illustrator, a person who makes drawings. Arnold Lobel didn't really think of himself as a writer, though. He thought of himself as a daydreamer. He saw the pictures of his books in his mind first. Later, he thought of stories to go with them.

Arnold Lobel started drawing pictures when he was in the second grade. He was sick a lot that year. He spent a lot of time at home in bed. There wasn't a lot that he could do. It was the early 1940s. He didn't have a television to watch. He had to find something to do to keep from being bored. Drawing was something that he liked to do. Animals were some of his favorite things to draw.
