Anne Frank
Many years ago, there was a young girl who had a big dream. She didn't want to become a millionaire or a famous singer. She didn't want to be a doctor or a lawyer. She wanted to become a writer. She wrote a book that has been read by millions. Her dream came true, but it didn't happen during her lifetime. The small red-and-white plaid diary, a gift for her thirteenth birthday, didn't contain a beautiful story with a happy ending. It was simply the story of her life.
Anne Frank was born into a Jewish family on June 12, 1929, in Germany. She had one older sister. Not long after Anne was born, German politics changed for the worse. As Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party continued to gain power, life became harder and harder for Jews.
A central part of Nazi politics was hatred of Jews. Under Nazi rule, German Jews were harassed, tortured, and killed. Early in the Nazi rule of Germany, many Jews, like Anne's family, knew what the Nazis might do to Jews. Like many other Jewish-German families, Anne's family packed up and moved. They thought they would be safe in the Netherlands.
