Kirsten and Ann are good friends. They got to know each other better after Ann was being bullied in the cafeteria. They have some classes together at school, and in their spare time, they talk and eat. Their latest idea was to start an anti-bullying club at school with the help of Ms. Sweet, the orchestra teacher.
The two friends are having their first anti-bullying club meeting in a classroom after school. Multicolored maps and photos from faraway places hang on the walls. These bright pictures make Mr. Compass's geography students daydream about escaping from school. Ann and Kirsten put creaky chairs in a circle. They put plates of cookies on one desk.
"What if no one comes?" said Kirsten. "We made so many peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies."
"Then we will have a big snack with Ms. Sweet," said Ann. She smiled broadly as her red freckles danced across her face.
"I think some kids will come to your meeting," said Ms. Sweet. "After all, everyone loves cookies. More importantly, most kids run into bullies sometimes. These kids might want someone to talk to."
Just then, a pale-faced girl with light brown hair slid quietly into the room. She looked like a mouse hunting for crumbs. Perhaps what she really needed was some morsels of self-esteem.
"Is this where the anti-bullying club is meeting?" she whispered.
"Yup, the meeting is here. Come on in, Samantha," said Kirsten.
Within a few minutes, more students had arrived in the classroom. They looked shy and nervous. They eyed the cookies hungrily. Ms. Sweet began the meeting by welcoming everyone in her musical voice. Then she asked Ann to explain more about the club.
