Angola Independence Day

Reading Comprehension for November 11

Have you ever had to work with people you didn't like? Maybe you've had to work on a school project with people you weren't fond of. Maybe you've had to work on a sports team with people you didn't really like. Is it easy to get things done with people you don't like? There are people in a country that have had a very hard time getting along. These are the people of Angola.

Angola is a country in southern Africa. Like most other African nations, Angola's history started with different tribes. Tribes are groups of native people. In Angola, there were three dominant tribes: the Ovimbundu, the Ambundu, and Bakongo. Each of these tribes considered themselves to be very different. They have rarely gotten along.

Beginning in the 15th century, European explorers traveled to "new" lands. One of these "new" lands was Africa. Explorers from Portugal found their way to Angola's coast in 1575. The Portuguese, like other European explorers, were there to find and steal riches. One of the riches they stole was the people of Angola. The Portuguese made slaves out of many Angolans.
