An Odd Fish, the Seahorse

Many kinds of animals live in the ocean. A seahorse is a kind of fish. They live in the ocean. Most live in shallow, warm waters. Unlike other fish, seahorses do not have scales. This is just one way they are different, or odd.

They don't look like fish! The seahorse gets its name from its horse-like head. It swims by flapping its small fins. They are not fast swimmers. When they swim, they look like they are swimming standing up!

When it needs to rest, the seahorse uses its curled tail. It wraps its tail around a piece of coral or seaweed and holds on. The tail also helps it move up and down in the water. If it wants to go up, it uncurls its tail. When it wants to sink lower in the water, it curls its tail tightly.
