Today is Mom's grocery shopping day. Sometimes she asks me to help her find things on the shelves. Sometimes she lets me push the shopping cart. But today she wants me to shop for fruit. "I want you to find each fruit I have on the list. And you must also get the number of fruit we need," she told me.
I held the list very tightly. The cart moved very easily. I was very nervous. "Mom trusts me to get this all by myself," I thought. "Will you be angry if I make a mistake?" I asked her.
"No, of course not," she said. "You will do just fine. I will be in the same part of the store if you need help. If you have any questions, come and ask me."
The first item on the list was five bananas. "I know what they look like so that should be easy," I said to myself. But when I looked at the bananas, I couldn't find just five. They were in bunches.
"Mom, come here, please," I called. "I can't find just five bananas."
"This is how you get five, Jill," she told me. She took the bunch with eight and pulled off three. "Three from eight is five, and now you have five bananas."
Next on the list were five green apples. "I thought apples were only red," I said to myself. The apples were close to the bananas. I saw the red ones and even gold-colored ones. I found the green apples and put five in a bag. I felt very proud as I put the apples in the cart.
Third on her list was one watermelon. I love watermelon! I found them in a big box on the floor. How am I going to get one of those in the cart? They are so big!
