When Markie was four days old, her mother took her to the edge of the roof.
"See that tree," she said. The tree was not too far from the edge of the house. "When you are older, you will be able to jump all the way to the tree."
"Why can't I do it now?" Markie asked.
"You are not old enough," her mother said. "There are things you must learn first." They climbed back down to the ground together.
All the next week Markie was busy learning. She learned how to climb. She learned how to jump from leaf to leaf. She watched her mother spin a web.
"I want to do that," Markie said. "I want to spin a web all by myself."
"When you are old enough," her mother said. "But you must be able to spin a web before you can jump to the tree."
Markie tried to spin a web. She could not do it yet. She practiced and practiced.
When she was six weeks old, she could spin a thread. She could not make it stick to anything.
