Albert Schweitzer - His Passion for Others Grows
In 1953, Dr. Albert Schweitzer accepted the Nobel Peace Prize. He received this most coveted prize for his beliefs. He had a special reverence for life. He respected the lives of every human being. He demonstrated his beliefs by creating a hospital for some of the poorest people in Africa. He was a respected doctor who gave up the luxuries of life to help those in need.
Albert Schweitzer's life began in an entirely different way. He was born on January 14, 1875, in the village of Kaysersberg in Upper Alsace. Alsace is located in eastern France on the German border. At the time of Albert's birth, it was part of Germany. His father was the pastor of a small church in his village. When Albert was just six months old, the family moved to Gunsbach, which had been his mother's home.
Albert was not a very healthy baby. It was feared for a time that he would not live past infancy. Luckily for the world, he was nursed back to health. From the age of two on, he grew into a strong boy.
